How do you anticipate the impact of the AI, AIoT, and other emerging technologies' exploitation by cybercriminals on industry sectors and critical infrastructure services in the coming years?
In the coming years, cybercriminals will amplify the intensity of cyberattacks on industry sectors and critical infrastructure by exploiting AI, AI of Things (AIoT), and other emerging technologies. AI will enable more sophisticated and automated threats, such as deepfake phishing or polymorphic malware that constantly rewrites its own code to avoid detection—it can also mutate ransomware and alter encryption methods in real time. AI enables attackers to clone websites to carry out clickjacking and browser fingerprinting, making scams harder to detect.
AIoT devices not only frequently lack in security measures but are extensively interconnected. This provides convenient opportunities for hackers to breach networks, carry out DDoS attacks, and interfere with critical systems such as power grids. With increasing dependence on these technologies across various industries, the potential for attacks grows, causing service disruptions, financial damages, and threats to public safety. With the convergence of digital and physical systems, even the smallest breaches could have huge impact. To stay ahead, organisations must strengthen AI governance, secure connected devices, and embed cyber resilience into every layer of infrastructure.
How can public-private sectors collaborate to bolster cybersecurity resilience regionally and globally?
The convergence of the private and public sector can bolster cybersecurity resilience. Partnering in research and investment can be the avenue to create cutting-edge cybersecurity technologies, including AI-driven solutions for threat detection and response. Governments should establish specific regulations, exchange threat intelligence, and assist in building capacity, while private companies can provide up-to-date data, technological advancements, and expertise on the front lines.
Public and private sectors must work closely together to build stronger cybersecurity at both regional and global levels. This includes creating joint response plans, running regular drills across sectors, and setting up clear communication channels to handle cyber incidents quickly and limit damage. It’s also important to invest together in advanced cybersecurity research, especially in AI-driven tools that can detect and respond to threats faster.
Public and private teamwork is key to strong cybersecurity. In Dubai, the Cyber Innovation Park (DCIP) by the Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC) brings together the government, private companies, and universities to work on new cybersecurity ideas and local solutions.
Another key initiative is Dubai’s Cyber Security Strategy, which encourages public and private partnerships to share threat intelligence, develop secure digital infrastructure, and promote cybersecurity resilience regionally.
What are the most critical cyber threats company and government leaders are still missing out putting their operations at risk?
As AI becomes deeply embedded in enterprise systems, many leaders overlook emerging threats like shadow AI, where employees use unapproved tools and introduce unseen vulnerabilities. Supply chain attacks, particularly through open-source models and datasets, are still an underestimated threat. Insider threats are now more challenging to identify in hybrid work settings. Legacy systems and misconfigured cloud setups widen the attack surface, leaving companies exposed to ransomware and AI-driven threats. Many leaders focus on prevention but overlook recovery and fail to build resilient backup systems. A holistic view into the AI life cycle along with enterprise-grade protections is no longer optional.
